At yesterday’s Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, Sega surprised everyone by announcing some new DLC for the upcoming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. While that initially sounds kind of random, there’s actually a very good reason for it: a bunch of Nickelodeon properties are coming to the game in the form of playable drivers and themed courses. How fun.
While we previously knew that Minecraft characters would be available in the season pass, we now know that around launch, SpongeBob SquarePants and his best friend Patrick Star will be playable. Before you ask, the trailer specifically mentions you don’t need a license to drive a sandwich, so SpongeBob isn’t breaking any laws. They’ll come equipped with a Krabby Patty car and the Bikini Bottom raceway, which looks to have all sorts of references for diehard SpongeBob fans.
In the future, the game will also include characters from TMNT Mutant Mayhem and Avatar Legends as future DLC. It’s too early for any footage or concept art, but sadly, the developers confirmed that these characters will not have voice acting. None of the collaboration characters will, as a matter of fact, including Sega owned ones such as Joker from Persona 5 and Kasuga Ichiban from Like a Dragon. That’s a bummer, but I guess getting to race as SpongeBob against Hatsune Miku is a thing I never thought I’d see.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will launch on September 25th, 2025, for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It will also be available on all other major platforms. You can get three days early access if you pre-order the game.
