So it’s finally back, for an earned encore,

It’s that lyrical treat from the N64!

You better cheer and you better clap,

It’s the Switch 2 debut of the DK Rap!

Yes, folks, for all you clamoring for early 2000s collectathon nostalgia Donkey Kong Bananza has got something special for you. Throughout the game’s dedicated Nintendo Direct plenty of music was played. Many of these tracks were familiar to fans of the series, ranging from the ever present “Jungle Hijinx” to familiar arcade melodies given a lyrical twist by Pauline.

Among those, specially paired to when DK takes a breather at in-game rest stops called Getaways, was none other than Donkey Kong 64’s “DK Rap”! This track introduced us to the likes of Lanky, Chunky, and Tiny Kong and took us to the fridge with a litany of legume and fruit callouts. It was a comical way to kick off the game, though one that’s endeared itself to fans ever since.

Written by Grant Kirkhope, the song would receive a new arrangement for Super Smash Bros. Melee and make other appearances — particularly its chanted refrain of “D-K… Donkey-Kong!” That includes an appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which notably did not credit Kirkhope due to an overarching policy of not attributing individual songs sourced from games to their original composers and instead noting their game of origin.

As far as Bananza goes, here’s hoping for more familiar songs to make the cut! It’s sounding more and more like music is a big theme for this adventure, making it all the more notable that we’ll be able to kick back with the “DK Rap” when the game arrives on July 17th.

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
