Despite having just launched the Switch 2, Nintendo news is pretty dry at the moment. With the summer almost upon us, it seems Nintendo is letting its already massive library of Switch 1 titles do the heavy lifting while it prepares more next-generation experiences. That’s what makes this 16-second teaser for the “Splatoon 3 North American League” so bizarre. It basically announces the event and then… nothing else.
What makes this announcement exciting is that Nintendo did not hold a championship series for the game last year. Splatoon 3 had some competitive events throughout 2022 and 2023, but The Big N seemingly took a break in 2024 to finalize the Switch 2… or perhaps hash out what Splatoon Raiders would be. Whatever the case, esports fans were left without an annual event and many thought Nintendo was perhaps moving on from Splatoon. Thankfully, that’s not the case, and 2025 should prove to be a big year for the brand.
As for what the event will entail, that is anyone’s guess. Nintendo has nothing posted on its website and even doing a Google search brings up no other information. I imagine there will be qualifying rounds soon that will eventually give way to a proper tournament. With Splatoon 3 having just received a Switch 2 patch, there are bound to be more players than ever jumping in.
