In a new report from Costa Rican outlet Teletica, it has been stated that Nintendo confirmed with distributors across Central America and the Caribbean that it will not be launching the Switch 2 in those regions this year. Nintendo had met with distributors on Tuesday night and unveiled its lack of plans, stating that the absence of a regional digital store was one of the key factors in the decision.
As Teletica explains, Central America doesn’t have an eShop available for digital purchases, so Nintendo has seemingly decided the market is “too small” to justify an official launch of its latest hardware. As such, the company has not allocated any stock for the area and will not be selling Switch 2s until at least 2026. The estimated price of the console in the region would have put it around $610 USD, so it seems Nintendo didn’t like that its console would be overly expensive either.
If it wasn’t clear, Nintendo will not be conducting any pre-orders in Central America or the Caribbean due to this decision, so anyone wishing to get a Switch 2 this year will need to import a console from elsewhere. No games or peripherals will be available, either, but that kind of goes without saying. It’s a tremendously bizarre decision considering the first Switch did well in pretty much every region it was on sale in, but I guess the current global economy is so uncertain that even Nintendo can’t guarantee a success.
