Between Mario Kart World’s official announced during Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2-focused Direct, hands on play time at Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events, and today’s Mario Kart World-focused Direct and press kit, we now have a rather robust list of playable racers. With up to 24 racers competing at once during Knockout Tour and Grand Prix there has to be plenty of characters to choose from, which is why the roster at launch may sit at 50 characters. This would make it the largest roster for any Mario Kart game. Throw in the costumes thanks to Dash Food, and we’re looking at a total of, at least, 145 “characters” (13 “pages” on the character selection screen was shown in the Direct and 12 characters are showcased on a single “page” – do the math and you’re looking at 156 “characters” max so far).

As for who is returning or making their debut, here are the 50 characters you’ll get to choose from in Mario Kart World (in no particular order):

  1. Mario
  2. Luigi
  3. Peach
  4. Daisy
  5. Rosalina
  6. Pauline
  7. Wario
  8. Waluigi
  9. Bowser
  10. Bowser Jr.
  11. Yoshi
  12. Birdo
  13. Donkey Kong
  14. Toad
  15. Toadette
  16. Baby Mario
  17. Baby Luigi
  18. Baby Peach
  19. Baby Daisy
  20. Baby Rosalina
  21. Cow
  22. Nabbit
  23. Pianta
  24. Spike
  25. King Boo
  26. Piranha Plant
  27. Chargin’ Chuck
  28. Monty Mole
  29. Para-Biddybud
  30. Rocky Wrench
  31. Koopa Troopa
  32. Lakitu
  33. Stingby
  34. Conkdor
  35. Cataquack
  36. Coin Coffer
  37. Dolphin
  38. Sidestepper
  39. Cheep Cheep
  40. Pokey
  41. Swoop
  42. Shy Guy
  43. Dry Bones
  44. Fish Bone
  45. Goomba
  46. Hammer Bro
  47. Peepa
  48. Penguin
  49. Snowman
  50. Wiggler

And as for costumes obtained via Dash Food, today’s Direct showed off a few outfits obtained from eating this new item in Cheep Cheep Falls (sushi and possibly Cheep Cheep-shaped taiyaki). The names of these outfits will change depending on the character – Mario and Luigi’s outfit from this meal is Happi (as they are wearing a happi), Peach’s is Yukata (as she is wearing a yukata), and Yoshi’s is Matsuri (as Yoshi’s outfit fits in with what can be worn at a Japanese festival, typically called a matsuri).

While not highlighted, these character selection screens also confirm that Lakitu will be getting a Happi or Matsuri oufit. Toad and Toadette will be getting explorer, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker-inspired outfits. Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, and Baby Rosalina will have “safari/adventure-themed” outfits. And Bowser Jr. is dressed in his own explorer outfit that closely resembles a scout uniform. Thanks to additional footage and images, we know that there are plenty of other outfits for racers to collect throughout Mario Kart World, but we don’t have a complete list yet.

Mario Kart World is still slated to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, June 5th, 2025 at $80 and will be available in a special Nintendo Switch 2 console bundle for $500 (digital only copy). Pre-orders for the US and Canada have yet to be confirmed after being delayed earlier this month.
