Not even a day has passed since we learned when the upcoming Legend of Zelda film would be hitting theaters, and we now have a ton of new details about the project. Surprisingly, these didn’t come from the Nintendo Today app, but from Production List, a tracking service run by the Film & Television Industry Alliance. On its official website, the Zelda movie is listed as having a shoot date between November 5, 2025, and April 7, 2026. Production will also take place in New Zealand, likely to capture a similar aesthetic and vibe to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The synopsis on the film doesn’t really give us anything concrete other than confirming Ganon will be in the movie.
“A live-action adaptation of the video game franchise. ‘The Legend of Zelda’ follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”
Further details about this project come from industry insider Daniel Richtman. As part of his Patreon, Richtman claims that Nintendo and Sony Pictures are planning a trilogy of films with Zelda. As Richtman believes, the principal actors signed for the first movie will be given a three-film contract set over six years that will likely tell a story spread across three movies. I suppose that adds up, as Hollywood has shifted to sequels and franchises ever since the original Lord of the Rings proved so popular.
I do think it is maybe a bit presumptuous to assume people will automatically love the first Zelda movie enough that it can warrant a sequel, but then maybe the plan is to lock down the actors just in case it does take off. At any rate, filming will begin later this year and we’ll likely see some on set photos that could corroborate some of this information.
