In what has to be my favorite surprise from today’s Nintendo Direct, developer Tribute Games announced a brand-new Marvel beat-em-up that not only looks like TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, but features designs seemingly cribbed from Marvel Vs. Capcom. Marvel Cosmic Invasion will be hitting PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S later this year, and it gives me some goosebumps just watching the spritework. It looks so good!
While this particular game isn’t based on any specific comic storyline, Cosmic Invasion will see the villain Annihilus do battle against Nova and Phyla-Vell alongside some legendary Marvel heroes. The roster will include the aforementioned two characters as well as Spider-Man, Wolverine, Venom, Storm, and Captain America. The Steam store page mentions that 15 characters will be playable, so expect to see possibly more X-Men and Avengers jump into the fray.
Cosmic Invasion will feature four-player co-op, but there’s also a mechanic where players will be able to select two characters at the same time. Similar to the original Marvel Vs. Capcom, you’ll be able to call in your other character as a support to string combos together, though there also seems to be a tag mechanic to swap characters on the fly. It should make for a really fluid combat system, something that Tribute Games nailed quite well in Shredder’s Revenge.
When does Marvel Cosmic Invasion release?
Marvel Cosmic Invasion does not currently have a release date, but I’m certainly looking forward to it. I can’t wait to get my hands on what is sure to be another beat-em-up classic.
