Nintendo has revealed that any game vouchers that are bought during the Switch’s lifecycle will not work on Nintendo Switch 2 first-party titles.
The vouchers were a means of getting two big first-party Switch titles together for $100, saving the consumer about $20 if they would have bought both games separately. The voucher system was introduced to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers in 2019.
A note has appeared on the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers website plainly stating “Please note that the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers cannot be redeemed for Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games.” The wording is specific. Game vouchers will still be applicable to Switch titles, just not Switch 2 titles. This should also mean potential cross-platform titles, if and when they exist, will be considered eligible games for use with the voucher system.
With the elimination of My Nintendo Rewards’ Gold Points system and the Nintendo Switch Game Voucher system, one has to wonder if Nintendo is finally doing a big revamp of its eShop and online practices for the Switch 2. These announcements are coming just before the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal event on April 2nd, after all and towards the end of Nintendo’s fiscal year in March. While these announcements seem like a bummer now, they could end up being the rollout for an exciting new system entirely. We’ll just have to wait and see.
