Nintendo’s video game legacy has come a long way since its inception; from the company’s first games in the ‘70s to the worldwide influence it holds now, there’s been a lot lost to time along the way. One of the more memorable relics of the past was the Nintendo Space World showcases held between 1989 and 2001. Of these, one of the most iconic was Space World 2000, which not only set the tone for the millenia, but also showed the iconic GameCube to the world for the first time. Despite it having been over two decades now since the event, that original prototype GameCube is up for sale for those most determined collectors out there.

The console was originally shared back in May of 2023 on Consolevariations, a blog site centered around all things consoles. There’s a handful of notable differences with this edition of the system, especially the lack of any internal hardware besides some LEDs, but also more subtle changes like a transparent logo, different air vents, and a wildly different controller than the final version. This unique piece of history is the holy grail for collectors, and fortunately for them, the system is being sold on eBay for a whopping $100,000. This price is unsurprisingly enormous, but with how unique of an item this is it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to see it so steep.

Sooner or later it’s almost certain that a determined collector will pick up this gem from the past, though who knows when it’ll actually be. When it comes to the preservation of gaming history, the community behind it will spare no expense. That includes the games themselves, not just hardware, as can be seen by the fan project to recreate the feeling of the Zelda 64 beta from Space World 1996. In either case, it’s nice to see these lost pieces of Nintendo’s story still being around and taken care of all these years later.
