The long period of speculation and rumor regarding the Nintendo Switch’s successor is finally coming to a close, with a reveal trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2 posted by Nintendo this morning. The trailer shows off just about every physical aspect of the console itself, as well as a few shots of what seems to be a brand-new Mario Kart. One aspect shown off in the trailer that immediately caught my eye is the shot of the pair of Joy-Con drifting (no, not that kind of Joy-Con drift) across a smooth black surface.

Both Joy-Con are slotted into what appears to be the Switch 2’s version of the Joy-Con Strap before they begin sliding across the surface on their edge, almost like a computer mouse. It was rumored a few weeks ago that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con would have the ability to act as a mouse thanks to leaked photos showing off what looked to be an optical sensor on the left Joy-Con, and the trailer today seemingly confirms that will be the case.

You can see the optical sensor on both Joy-Con in a few of the shots from the video, and very clearly in the shot of the left Joy-Con below:

In the sequence of the Joy-Cons sliding on the black surface you can also just make out what look like small black pads on the edge of the Joy-Con strap that is touching the surface, like you’d find on a computer mouse.

The new trailer, of course, doesn’t go into any specific details about the various functions of the Switch 2’s Joy-Con, but the presence of the optical sensor and the pads on the Joy-Con strap coupled with the animation of the Joy-Con drifting around seem to point towards the rumors of mouse-like functionality being true.
