After months of speculation and leaks, the Nintendo Switch 2 was finally revealed this morning. In the two minute and 22 second trailer, not much was shown other than the console itself and a new Mario Kart game. However, one aspect of the new console was finally confirmed: backwards compatibility with original Switch games.

It’s been a topic of speculation and while it makes sense for Switch 2 to play games from Switch 1, we can never really know until we get confirmation nowadays. Switch 2 will be able to play both physical and digital games from the original Switch, with a few exceptions. Nintendo notes that some games may not be fully compatible or be playable at all on the new console.

This is a similar situation with the 3DS/DS, as 3DS games had a notch to prevent play on the DS but most DS games were compatible with the 3DS. It makes me wonder if Switch 2 games will have something similar to prevent play on Switch 1 or if it’ll simply refuse to boot up the game from the menu.

We won’t have to wait too long for more info, as a Nintendo Direct is scheduled for April 2nd, 2025 focusing on Switch 2. What games are you most excited to see on the new console? Let us know on Twitter!
