Never put it past dedicated modding communities to make older consoles run on a wide range of hardware. Once we started to get into 3D consoles, the desire to play older games on newer hardware increased and it was up to fan communities to make that wish a reality. While the GameCube has never been particularly popular for old-school emulation, there have been plenty of attempts over the years to get older consoles running on it. We can now add PlayStation to the list.

In a video by YouTuber SpawnWave, we get a glimpse of the latest version of CubeSX, a PS1 emulator developed almost 20 years ago that has never quite run PS1 games well on Nintendo’s purple lunchbox. Thanks to a new update, PS1 emulation is entirely viable and a lot of games even run better than Sony’s entry into the console market. Crash Bandicoot is practically flawless and even the original Gran Turismo is playable with some adjustments. Weirdly, Metal Gear Solid doesn’t quite work due to the GameCube controller not having enough buttons, but then a native port for Nintendo’s system already exists.

I suppose in 2024, it’s more for curiosity’s sake to run PS1 games on the GameCube. As SpawnWave notes, the Wii is essentially a Super GameCube, so playing PS1 games is much better on there. The recent update to the GameCube’s PS1 emulator actually came about from a major breakthrough in Wii emulation and with the two consoles having similar hardware, it was backported. There are probably some people out there who never left the GameCube behind, so I guess they can now finally enjoy PS1 games without having to keep Sony’s hardware on hand.
