I didn’t anticipate that I would be writing about a new Sega Genesis cartridge in 2024, but we’re certainly living in some bizarre times. To promote the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film, Sega has produced some promotional Genesis cartridges that include EPK (electronic press kit) materials. There’s even a funky little minigame where Sonic runs away from Shadow.

As IGN shared on its Twitter account, the cartridge is less a game and more a series of posters and voice clips, but it’s fully functional on original Genesis hardware and features appropriately bit-crushed audio clips. The short video gives us a taste of Keanu Reeves as Shadow and we get to see some 16-bit colorized versions of the theatrical posters. There’s a hidden secret, though, when you go into the mini-game.

Upon entering the Sonic 3 cheat code while playing the minigame, Sonic will state, “Hey, I said no cheat codes! Ok, just this once.” Then, the main menu will reveal that a new trailer for the film will be released on November 25th, 2024. I guess there is no way to connect to the internet via a Genesis cartridge, so that’s certainly a way to get the news out about your film.
