One of the most common talking points among video game circles is often the music that accompanies them. Yet for every award-winning soundtrack, there’s a handful of tracks that live on for more amusing reasons. Perhaps the most well-known song of this caliber is the notorious “DK Rap” from Donkey Kong 64. Being the subject of many jokes and gags over the years, it has remained in the public mind on the merits of how quickly it seemed to age even from its original release. Despite this reputation it’s still a fan-favorite, and if anything this made it the perfect candidate to get a modern rendition.

The original composer of the Donkey Kong 64, Grant Kirkhope, has been working to celebrate the upcoming 25th anniversary of the game with a remaster of the original soundtrack. The project is called Rare Treats: DONKEY KONG 64 Revisited and being released by Materia Collective. The notorious “DK Rap” has received its own remastered version as part of this release, featuring new lyrics performed by the artist Substantial. The spirit of the original remains perfectly intact, yet in a fresh way that would befit the game had it been made today.

Of all the fun surprises the year has brought, it seems unlikely that anyone was expecting a brand-new take on the classic “DK Rap” like this. Of course, the Rap isn’t the only song to receive this treatment. The full album features 18 tracks and is set for release on November 22nd, the 25th anniversary of Donkey Kong 64. If you’re eager to tap into some N64 nostalgia in a new yet familiar way, see where you can listen to it when it does come out!
