In a bit of a surprise announcement today, Playtonic has revealed that its 2017 platformer Yooka-Laylee will be getting a second shot at success soon. While not a sequel, Yooka-Replaylee will be an enhanced and overhauled version of the original title that addresses some of the biggest issues people had with the first iteration. To that effect, the controls and camera will be receiving tweaks to help streamline the game.

As you would expect from any remaster, there will be visual changes to the game that bring it up to 2024 standards. While “enhanced performance and resolution” are highlighted, new animations have been added to make the game feel a bit more polished. Coins will also be dropped into each map to give players new currency to spend at Vendi, the game’s living vending machine.

The most unexpected tweak may be the change to the soundtrack. Both David Wise and Grant Kirkhope will be returning, but their score will now be fully orchestrated. That should help make the game’s atmosphere feel a bit grander in scale than it previously was. It will also give players a reason to tackle the brand-new in-game challenges that are sure to be deviously designed.

At present, Yooka-Replaylee has only been announced for PC. It’s very unlikely this won’t hit consoles, though. We’ll learn more on June 11, 2024, as Playtonic is set to host a Q&A session on its YouTube page.
