In promotion for actor Chris Pine’s directorial debut film Poolman, Danny DeVito has been doing various interviews for publications and YouTube channels. In what will likely be a viral moment for YouTuber “The Movie Dweeb,” DeVito just about stated that he’d love to play Wario in a sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie. While I would personally have loved him to be Mario, I could see Wario working.

Danny DeVito as Wario

Towards the end of the interview, Daniel Merrifield (The Movie Dweeb’s real name) brings up some different opportunities that DeVito has in the pipeline and posits the idea that DeVito would play Wario in a Super Mario Bros. sequel. DeVito doesn’t directly confirm that he is considering the idea but explains that he is up for a lot of different ideas.

“You never know what happens in the world. I’m up for a lot of things, you know,” DeVito states. “I’m ready to do a lot of things, so, whatever’s coming.” Merrifield then jokingly says he’ll let Chris Pratt know before DeVito responds, “You should tell them that I’m gonna take ’em to the cleaners, but I should be in the movie.” Not a direct confirmation that DeVito is super interested, but still a signal of his enthusiasm for various projects.

I’m not sure that Illumination and Universal are even considering bringing Wario into the Mario movie sequel, but there is still time for DeVito to be cast for a role. The film isn’t scheduled for release until 2026, so anything can happen between now and then.
