The world became a much colder, sadder place when Geoffrey the Giraffe hung up his Hawaiian shirt for the last time in 2018. As likely every ’90s kid will remember, Toys”R”Us used to be the premiere place to go for toys, video games, and all kinds of fun. It provided a colorful, inviting environment where parents could take their kids to cool off for an hour or so while they got some new playthings.

While there have been some attempts to revive the name as simply a brand, this latest bit of news will be sure to surprise anyone with nostalgia for TRU. In Burbank, California on San Fernando Road, a new pop-up Toys”R”Us storefront has been built where the previous K-Mart store was. The reason for this sudden overhaul? It has to do with Michael Jackson, oddly enough.

Supposedly, there’s a new Michael Jackson biopic in the works that necessitates a scene in Toys”R”Us. I think the jokes basically write themselves with that setup, but that’s about the only fun you’ll have here. While the signage and design are vintage TRU, there is no functional store in the building. This is merely set dressing for an exterior shot that will likely composite the internals through the windows in post-production.

That’s certainly a bummer. Still, getting to bask in the glory of Geoffrey’s visage and those colorful letters one last time might just be worth the trouble of driving to a remote mall. If the construction workers aren’t blasting the Toys”R”Us kid theme song 24/7, then they’re doing it wrong.
