Sabotage Studio’s Sea of Stars, one of last year’s most acclaimed RPGs, was a loving tribute to 16-bit RPGs of old (specifically Chrono Trigger). While I didn’t think there was really anything else the developer could do to layer on more old-school vibes, a new three-player co-op was just teased. Now, Sea of Stars will be pulling from Secret of Mana.

In a mode that will be dubbed “Single-Player+,” you and two friends will be able to traverse the world of Sea of Stars together from the comfort of your couch. While traversing the world map, all three players will have independent movement from one another. During combat, things will still play out turn-based, but players must select their skills and attacks individually. Sabotage also mentions a new mechanic called “Co-op timed hits,” but we don’t know exactly what that is yet.

5 Million Players have crossed the Sea of Stars

If you thought this co-op update would be the end for Sea of Stars, think again. Over on Sabotage’s official Twitter account, the company revealed that over five million players have played its wonderful RPG since launch. This number was likely aided by the game releasing day and date on Xbox Game Pass, but it’s still a remarkable feat nonetheless.

With the new co-op mode coming in the future, that number is bound to grow in the coming months. While an online option would be fun, I can understand sticking to couch co-op. The SNES didn’t have online functionality (officially, at least), so it’s not like owners of Secret of Mana could dial up their friends to adventure together.
