There’s potential that the Nintendo Switch could become the highest-selling console of all time. In today’s quarterly financial report, Nintendo revealed that during its last quarter, the Switch managed to sell through 139.36 million units. That number is reportedly accurate as of December 31, 2023.

Back in November, Nintendo stated the Switch had sold just 132.46 million units. With the holiday season then upcoming, it looks as if the hybrid console had quite a healthy season. To push through another seven million consoles just for the holidays is incredibly impressive for a system that is nearly seven years old.

The Future for Nintendo

What do these sales numbers mean for the future? Well, in a report from Bloomberg, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the Switch would remain the company’s “main business” going into 2024. While Furukawa did not talk about a Switch successor, the wording is very curious there. Why would the current Switch be Nintendo’s main business for the first half of the year and not the entire year?

Whether the Switch will surpass the Nintendo DS (which sold 154 million units) and claim the title of the highest-selling console of all time remains to be seen. However, with the Switch 2 on the horizon, it will likely take an extraordinary game (or massive price drop) to achieve that feat.
