As part of the latest Variety Awards Circuit podcast, actor and comedian Jack Black revealed some ideas he would love to see for a potential Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel. It should come as no surprise to fans of the film, but Black would love to see Universal Pictures and Illumination pivot to a full-on musical so that Bowser can get his dues.

When asked about what plans were for the sequel, Black told Variety, “It has been radio silence. The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don’t even know if I’m allowed to chatter.” Considering the movie has gone on to become 2023’s second-highest-grossing film at the box office, Nintendo will absolutely be doing something in the future. As for what Black would like to see, he told Variety he wants a musical dubbed “Bowser’s Revenge” that goes all-in on being a musical similar to the upcoming Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux. “I think it should be a full musical, like what Todd Phillips is supposedly doing with Joker 2,” he said.

Anyone who has seen The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be instantly familiar with Bowser’s little ditty, “Peaches.” A love ballad to the Princess of the Toadstool Kingdom, “Peaches” became a hit and even found itself on the Billboard Hot 100 charts after the film’s debut. The song was co-written by Black along with the film’s two directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film’s editor Eric Osmond, and composer John Spiker. According to Black, it wasn’t a part of the film until halfway through production.
