It’s now 2023, which means it’s been 70 years since the founding of Taito Corporation in Tokyo in 1953 – and the company is celebrating with a brand new website for any and all anniversary news that will come.

Founded by Jewish Russian refugee Michael Kogan, the company – known at the time as Taito Trading Company – imported vodka, jukeboxes, and vending machines into Japan. After 20 years, it began video game development in 1973, where the company proceeded to make some of the most important arcade games ever made: Speed Race, Bubble Bobble (released recently on Arcade Archives!), Arkanoid, and the legendary Space Invaders, one of the most influential, iconic, and long lasting video games ever made.
The company has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Square Enix since the mid ’00s, but still operates a ton of arcade centers across Japan while also manufacturing plushes, crane game prizes, and other toys. While less active in game development in the past few years, they still put stuff out on occasion, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for the 70th anniversary.
