Nobody on earth is born a gamer. As much as we love to flaunt how we were born with a controller in one hand and… another part of the same controller in the other hand, it’s all taught and encultured throughout our long and rich lives, some coming later to the hobby than others. Such is the case with Anya Taylor-Joy, the actress voicing Peach in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie. After dressing up as Peach for Halloween, Taylor-Joy has spoken to multiple outlets about becoming a gamer in the wake of her movie’s role, specifically at arcades. Speaking with Modern Luxury San Diego:

“So now I am a gamer, and it’s really fun. Ideally, I like playing at arcades, because, again, it’s like cinema; I love the ceremony. I’ll go with a whole bunch of friends. And we’ll just spend hours at the arcade.”

And MTV News:

“…Once I booked the job and my friends were so excited, we bought all of, you know, the Mario Kart world and we really went for it. My favorite way to play is at the arcade though. I’ve now become, like, a hardcore adult arcade individual.”

I have to respect her for understanding the appeal of the ever-fading arcades out there – the experience of getting lost in the dim lights among the blinkings and whirrs isn’t something you can replicate at home. I’d love to know what her favorite games are, whether at home or at a cabinet. Do you think she’s a Frogger fiend?

The Super Mario Bros. Movie drops in theaters across the US on April 7th, 2023.
