For as much skepticism and scorn as certain parts of The Super Mario Bros. Movie casting and performance has gotten (most of the ire falling on the man whose name rhymes with ‘Cis Brat’), the one thing everybody seems to love is Jack Black’s monstrous performance as Bowser, which he’s clearly put his full creative spirit into (like everything else the man has given us, from the explosive crudeness of Tenacious D to the more family friendly fun of School of Rock or Kung Fu Panda). Black took the stage at New York Comic-Con, where he had a great deal of fun showing off his Bowser voice to the delight of everyone:

Even more tantalizing than that showcase are his comments on something long untapped in the Mario universe’s interpretations of Bowser: musicality. “I did a little bit of rocking. I think you’ll be surprised to see that Bowser has a musical side.” Whether that means his performance just gets a little sing-songy at times, or the king of the Koopas gets a full blown musical number, it’s a little ambiguous. But please, for the love of heaven, let it be the latter. If Bowser gets a rock opera track this automatically becomes the greatest video game movie of all-time, no matter what else happens.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie releases on April 23rd, 2023.
