Do you ever see a piece of merchandise so beautiful you start crying? Its texture so palpable that you can feel it tight in your arms, giving you warmth and comfort in this cruel and bleak world? Our joys are few and far between these days, and that makes the rush of endorphins and serotonin felt by looking at these new 4th-gen starter plushies all the more valuable. Perhaps there is hope for this world yet.

I mean, just look at them. Piplup, with his contrasting, fuzzy shades of blue. Chimchar, legs kicked out like he’s about to enjoy a sunny day on the porch. Turtwig… my beloved, one and only Turtwig… sitting on his back legs with his little front legs forward. I want to cherish him, to hold him before the sun and clutch him tightly to my chest, for our days to be warm and memorable and bright. My heart feels like it’s made of the same material as his skin when I look at him. “Joy” fails to capture its shape or essence in full capacity. It’s something more transcendent than that.

The plushies cost ¥3,960 each, a small price to pay for products that bolster the human soul. They’re releasing in Japan April 7th. No word on international release at the moment. Please, The Pokémon Company. For the sake of humankind. Please.
