Gamescom, the largest video game convention in Germany and all of Europe, has been an online-exclusive event for the last couple years due to the worldwide pandemic. Now, the event is returning to an in-person event this August 24th through 28th in Cologne — while still retaining certain functions online, making it a hybrid event.

In addition, gamescom 2022 is purporting to be the world’s first carbon-neutral gaming convention, building off its previous endeavors (free public transport tickets and the gamescom forest) by investing money to a wind energy project in Brazil and a clean cooking stove project in Nigeria to offset carbon emissions during the event proper. It hopes that this is only the beginning of reducing carbon emissions in general and providing an example for other gaming conventions to follow.

For more information on the convention’s green initiative and more, check out the official gamescom press release.
