Few creators’ names are as intrinsically tied to their work as Shigesato Itoi’s is to the Mother series. While a pretty well known celebrity in Japan for his copywriter work, among other things (like voicing the dad in My Neighbor Totoro or being a judge on Iron Chef), in the West he will always be known as the brain, heart, and soul of the Mother series — and upon the release of EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings on the Switch, Itoi has released a short video to commemorate the occasion.
Itoi is just like his games in the video — warm, earnest, and full of whimsy as he expresses a sincere excitement for more people being able to play the games. It’s a joy to see him legitimately happy and eager to get the games into more people’s hands, enough to make a longtime Mother fan (like myself) get emotional.
