In the original Chocobo Racing for the PS1 players were treated to various unlockable characters from across Squaresoft’s back catalogue. Perhaps the most eyecatching were Cloud and Squall, the protagonists of Final Fantasy VII and VIII respectively.
Now it’s been confirmed that they’re returning in Chocobo GP, but there’s a catch for both…
Squall is perhaps the easier of the two to unlock, being available via the in-game Gil Shop.
Cloud, however, is intrinsically tied to the Season Pass system. If you level up the pass to 60, you’ll unlock the Ex-SOLDIER. Level up a few more times and you’ll also unlock a couple of extra bikes for him to ride.
Spend Mythril to acquire an in-game Prize Pass in #ChocoboGP and you'll become eligible to obtain special season rewards exclusive to Prize Pass holders at each season level.
This opens up access to a selection of deluxe prizes, like new characters that change each season… 👀 pic.twitter.com/2hsSEtFs0z

Square Enix does state that players who log-in during the season will get 800 free Mythril, which should be enough to unlock Cloud, but as of right now it’s unclear how easy it will be to unlock future character drops.
Crash Team Racing’s HD remaster similarly included a Season Pass system and time till tell if Chocobo GP’s implementation is similar. You’ll be able to take to the tracks in Chocobo GP on March 10th.
