There might not be a Mr. Sakurai Presents on the way, but the man himself still has plenty he can share when it comes to Super Smash Bros. To coincide with Smash Ultimate’s third anniversary, Masahiro Sakurai has provided a little commentary on each fighter reveal trailer for both Smash for 3DS/Wii U and Ultimate. These productions have become almost as beloved as the games themselves in some ways, and having and excuse to re-watch them is always welcome.
Some of my favorite details are that Rosalina’s reveal directly aimed for a Mario Kart meets Kirby Air Ride feel, something fans have assumed for years. He also calls himself out for enjoying characters appearing from high places, and characters arriving in a pinch to turn the tables — something that happens in several trailers, such as Robin’s and Sephiroth’s.
While it’s not extensive, getting Mr. Sakurai’s thoughts on his work is a treat, and brings an even greater appreciation for Smash’s grand design. Make sure to check out all the commentary and relive those reveal moments at Nintendo’s dedicated participation movie page!
