Back in my day, a Google Doodle was a slight alteration of the Google Logo. Sometimes it would celebrate a holiday or famous person, but, for the most part, they were pretty simplistic. Now, a Google Doodle can be almost anything – a video, a short film, and in today’s case, a fully-featured JRPG inspired video game, complete with cutscenes, an amazing SNES-inspired soundtrack, and the cutest cat you ever did see! Enter Doodle Champion Island Games!

The game is actually pretty robust, featuring seven different sports to play, ranging from ping-pong to skateboarding. Are you cat enough to defeat all seven game masters and acquire the sacred scrolls? Only one way to find out!

While the premise seems pretty simplistic, I was shocked to see just how much love went into this project. Everything from the Yo-Kai Watch-esque intro to the absolutely banging soundtrack that gave me some serious Chrono Trigger vibes, Doodle Champion deserves a playthrough! You can even check out a developer diary below for some details on what went into the game’s creation!

You can play Doodle Champion Island Games on its dedicated Google Doodle page, as well as see even more “Behind the Pixels” information thanks to the game’s Creative Lead, Nate Swinehart, on Twitter.
