Filming for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel has wrapped in Vancouver, and in that time locals and fans alike witnessed stand-in props and a Mean Bean Coffee Shop. As production continues, some new details have appeared to help us live (and learn) new details on Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s plot.
Per a (spoiler-filled) copyright claimed by both Paramount Pictures and Sega of America on April 9th, we now have a brief and general synopsis of the movie. Be advised that this is preliminary information and may not be entirely reflective of what arrives on the big screen next year. Still, without a trailer or any official rundown it’s the best we’ve got.
Anyone wary of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 spoilers, you’ve been warned:
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Being directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz.
This not only confirms Knuckles the Echidna having a key role in the plot, with his debut appearance’s antagonism (and perhaps gullibility) back in this portrayal. It’s also the first mention of an emerald, though if it’ll be Knuckles’ Master Emerald or the more recognizable Chaos Emerald remains to be seen. Likewise, no actors have been announced for Knuckles or Tails as of this writing or filing.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will release in theaters on April 8th, 2022.
