It’s a shame that Rockstar has shown no interest in bringing the Grand Theft Auto series to the Switch. While it can be argued that a modern GTA title may be difficult to port to the console, given that it doesn’t quite boast the horsepower of its competitors, it would be great to see some legacy titles make their way onto the eShop or as a collection. Homebrewers, however, are done waiting.

The Switch homebrew community has managed to get Grand Theft Auto III – the series’s acclaimed debut into 3D – running on the system. They have done a fine job, too, with the game running at 1080p/30fps docked and 720p/30fps handheld. You can see for yourself in the videos below just how smooth it runs.

We haven’t seen an official Grand Theft Auto title make its way to a Nintendo system since 2009 when Chinatown Wars launched on the DS. It doesn’t seem as though this will change anytime soon, either, so this fanmade port may be our only opportunity to see the sandbox gangster series playable on the Switch… until, of course, someone inevitably produces a port of Vice City next.
