It’s starting to look like if you’re a Kong, the place to be is Mario Kart Tour. Earlier this year we saw Funky Kong step into the driver’s seat once again and Dixie Kong made her first playable appearance in the series. Now another forgotten friend (or would that be foe?) is stepping out of Nintendo history and into your gacha summoning pool.

None other than Donkey Kong Jr., last seen in a Kart on the Super Nintendo, is returning in all his 16-bit glory to have another go at the checkered flag. This marks Donkey Kong Jr.’s first playable appearance since Mario Tennis on the N64 back in 2000, a 20 year absence mostly filled by Diddy Kong, classic compilations, and Smash Bros. cameos.

He’s joined by Mario as he appeared in Super Mario Kart as well, celebrating the original Mario Kart game all in time to Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary. Keep an eye out (and hope your luck delivers) for the Super Mario Kart Tour, coming September 8th.

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
