We’ve seen tournaments for 64, Melee, and Brawl come and go; limiting stages and characters to the ones introduced in those titles. Now in Ultimate, it’s the pair of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U’s turn to remind players just how much it brought to the series.
The three-day Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event tourney "Free Four All" starts on 24/07, and is limited to fighters and stages originating from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U! Items that appeared in that game are also available! pic.twitter.com/fc1hhRyOEM

From the moment Villager checked his mail all the way through the surge in third party (and Fire Emblem) support, 3DS and Wii U were stacked with content through and through. They may feel like ‘proto-Ultimate’ at this point, but that just goes to show how well they did as a pair.
You can take the fight online in the weekend long Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U tournament event starting Friday, July 24th.
