The Final Fantasy series contains many aspects, but one of the most beloved is likely its vast library of music. It’s why we have Theatrhythm games, and it’s why Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s lack of FF songs is painfully noticeable. Several have composed for the series at this point, but one name stands out as the most recurring and indispensable to that legacy – Nobuo Uematsu.

Why bring him up on the day celebrating Final Fantasy IX’s 20th anniversary? Because the man has gone on record saying that it is both his favorite game in the series and his favorite overall work within Final Fantasy.

If you’d like to see why that’s the case (or just revisit these songs you already know and love), Square Enix has released a Final Fantasy IX 20th anniversary playlist across major streaming platforms. It’s absolutely worth a listen even outside of the game itself, and I encourage anyone curious to at the absolute least take in Melodies of Life.
