The Pokémon Company made the tough decision to cancel its 2020 Pokémon Europe International Championships today. Citing the World Health Organization’s recommendations for dealing and preventing the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus), European representatives for 2020 Pokémon World Championships will have to be decided through another method instead of the scheduled event in Berlin, Germany.

Currently, the 2020 Pokémon North America International Championships or 2020 Pokémon World Championships aren’t affected yet. If either event needs to be cancelled, it’s safe to assume that The Pokémon Company will make the announcement closer to these events.

In addition to the cancellations, Play! Pokémon events will be undergoing some changes, such as the suspension regarding the requirement of shaking hands before and after battles. Other recommendations from the World Health Organization that will be implemented focus on cleaning surfaces and making hand sanitizer more readily available. Any other changes will be made closer to the event as COVID-19 statistics are changing daily.

It’s sad to see another gaming event cancelled due to COVID-19, but it’s for the best in trying to halt the spread of the virus and keeping those with compromised immune systems as safe as possible.
