Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 has a small collection of retro goodness when it comes to its events, but on top of those a selection of minigames takes on the old school charm. Blending 8 and 16-bit graphics to bring Mario and Sonic back to their roots, you can see one of these extra minigames in action below:

The Tokyo Sky Flight minigame has the two heroes team up, with Sonic wing walking as he has since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Mario piloting à la Super Mario Land. Together they’re protecting Tokyo’s skies, and in other minigames you’ll see them take to the streets and rivers of the city as well in pursuit of Bowser and Dr. Eggman.

It’s not just the older style that gets in on this, though, as Luigi and Tails have their own set of more modern minigames to play through as well. All of these are unlocked over the course of the game’s Story Mode. The graphical upgrade also allows them to pay tribute to Tokyo landmarks such as the Shibuya crossing and Tokyo Tower itself, filling them with elements and characters familiar to both the Mario and Sonic worlds.

You can experience all of these for yourself when Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 arrives on November 5th. Pre-order your copy on Amazon today!
