Shantae 5, the upcoming next title in the Shantae franchise of platforming games, will feature a “brand-new opening animation” done by Japanese animation studio Studio Trigger.
Shantae 5’s developer, WayForward, announced the collaboration on Twitter, where it also shared a “sneak peek” at some production artwork of both Shantae and antagonist-and-sometimes-ally Risky Boots.

Shantae 5 will be the first in the series to feature an intro movie of any kind; the Kickstarter-funded Shantae: Half-Genie Hero had animated cutscenes as a $1.3 million stretch goal, but it wasn’t achieved.
Studio Trigger was established in 2011 and has worked on several Japanese anime series including Kill la Kill, Little Witch Academia, and Darling in the Franxx.
Aside from television series and theatrical release Promare, Studio Trigger has also done work on several video games’ opening animations, including Project X Zone and Indivisible.
Studio Trigger was also responsible for the Live2D illustrations of character units in Fire Emblem Fates.
Shantae 5 will be released for Nintendo Switch, along with PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Apple Arcade, in late 2019.
