After the stunned, silent weeping in response to yesterday’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer, Detective Pikachu is here to remind us that it’s possible to make beloved characters realistic and cute at the same time. This one features a short new scene where Ryan Reynolds’ eponymous investigator snarks about spa music used to assuage Psyduck’s headache, right before giving the mallard’s webbed feet a begrudging massage. Most of the rest is recycled from previous trailers, but it’s still good to see comic timing, witty charm, and actually funny jokes.
