Build, create, destroy: Minecraft’s humble beginnings have evolved and expanded far and wide. Books, interactive adventures, toys, ports to the next generation of consoles — but what it hasn’t done is invaded theaters like a horde of creepers.

Warner Bros. and Microsoft are changing that. Announced on the official Minecraft site and with a release date years away, March 4th, 2022, a Minecraft movie is in the works. Details are scarce at this point, given that we’re nearly three years away from the release date, but Microsoft did share the following information with the announcement:

“[T]he story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”

Deeming this new endeavor has an official storyline, who knows what kind of integration this film will have with the games. Whatever that may be, there’s a mountain of pre-production to chip away at until the premiere. Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you updated with the latest information as it’s released.
