In the past couple years, Nintendo has done some interesting branching out in terms of branding and collaboration. We saw the release of several pairs of Vans sneakers in 2016, with the crossover incorporating franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong. And even earlier in 2015, we saw Nintendo team up with luxury clothing company Moschino to launch the “Super Moschino” collection — filled to the brim with Mario inspired designs. In 2017, Uniqlo revealed the winners of their global Nintendo shirt design contest, where they encouraged people from around the world to submit Nintendo-themed t-shirt designs.
There have been plenty of other ventures in Nintendo branding and collaborations, but it seems that none hit quite as hard as the clothing collabs. Luckily for us, it looks like another one might be on its way soon.
While there’s no official word yet, Instagram user @hugokickz has shared some interesting images that were reported on by sneakerhead website Sole Collector. According to the images, two brand new pairs of Adidas low-tops could be making their way to the market somewhat soon, featuring designs that show of two of Pokémon’s greatest: Pikachu and Squirtle.
First off, the shoes are gorgeous, and there’s no doubt in my mind that if they’re real, they’ll fly off shelves fast. Both are similar in design aside from the featured Pokémon, with the white leather upper featuring a subtle all-over design of either Pikachu or Squirtle illustrations, white laces, and either yellow or blue heal tabs indicative of which pair you have.
The two main features of the design however are the co-branded tongue tag, featuring both the Adidas and Pokémon logos, and full-color embroidered character patch in place of the typical three-stripe Adidas branding.
I’ve gotta admit, these sneakers are stunning — and I have to wonder if they’re real, is there potential for more? Perhaps we’ll see Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Eevee? Mewtwo? Obviously, as with anything Pokémon, the possibilities are truly almost endless and I’d be eager to see what else Adidas and Pokémon do. Regardless, I think if these do end up in stores I’ll need a pair of both… and maybe some blue or yellow laces to accent.
