In the hazy smoke of the console wars, it’s easy to forget that while certain fans cling to their consoles of choice like monotheistic idols, the vast majority of actual game devs are enjoying each other’s work. Case in point — Raf Grassetti, art director of God of War (2018) and veteran of the industry, has started a series of Super Smash Bros. pieces on Twitter, and they’re mighty impressive.

Rather than simple sketches, Grassetti puts in some effort to reimagine the Smash characters in his style, often bulking up the proportions slightly and adding in some exquisite detail. From the heftier design he gives Samus’ suit, to the intricate scaled covering Bowser, to the realistic yet still cartoony Sonic, they all strike a good chord between hyper-realism and the original cartoony designs that have made them iconic.

It’s unclear just how many character Grassetti is planning to draw, but we sincerely hope he keeps going with the project, because it’s been wonderful to see his efforts thus far.
