Earlier this year, Sony landed itself in hot-water for being the only platform provider not allowing cross-play, while Microsoft, Nintendo, and PC players were able to face off against each other in Fortnite freely. It seems like the criticism has finally reached the company’s ears, as Sony has announced a beta for Fortnite cross-play on PlayStation 4.

While this may not seem like big news if you’re not a fan of Fortnite, it’s worth noting that this may open the doors to even more cross-platform multiplayer games in the years to come. A rather major example is Final Fantasy XIV, where a port to Switch and Xbox One was contingent on cross-play between all versions.
This will likely shake up a few future multiplayer titles and we’ll be sure to bring you all the latest as it happens!
