As the 3DS’ lifespan continues sinking into the sunset, certain series’ that relied on it and its predecessors’ unique capabilities are left in uncertainty. Case in point – Etrian Odyssey, which premiered on the DS and thrived thanks to the two-screen touch-enabled set-up that allowed the easy marking of maps as you played. The upcoming Etrian Odyssey X seems prime to offer a series swansong, a final farewell to the dual-screened systems – but Atlus is already looking beyond that.

A 30-second teaser posted to Atlus’ YouTube channel hints at an announcement for the series, as the term SQ (a common abbreviation for the series’ name in Japan, Sekaiju no Meikyuu) and the English words “to the next stage” implying a change in systems. No platforms are detailed, so we can only speculate as to where the series will land next – Switch? Mobile? Somewhere else? No console seems quite as suited to the Etrian style of gameplay, so unless a radical shift is in the pipeline then we can’t know what will come.

Etrian Odyssey X is releasing in a few days in Japan, and related spin-off Persona Q 2 is coming at some point to 3DS as well. Neither game has been confirmed for a Western release. Stay wired for any potential news on that front.
