After announcing the July 29th Japanese release date of Dragon Quest XI earlier today, Square Enix broke history by announcing a very unusual bundle – both the PS4 and 3DS versions of the game will be included in a single special bundle.

Both games will be packaged inside two hollow books, which themselves will be placed inside a very classy long box featuring an iconic sword from the game. Check it out:

What’s noteworthy is that both Nintendo and Sony would have had to sign off on this unprecedented partnership – it just goes to show what a big deal Dragon Quest is in Japan.

If you’re curious what Dragon Quest XI will look like, you can check out a trailer that mixes footage from both versions below:

As for the confirmed Nintendo Switch version, the Wall Street Journal’s Takashi Mochizuki asked about it, to which Square Enix responded that, while support is still planned, they cannot say whether it will release alongside the other two versions. Given the presence of this bundle, however, it’s looking unlikely.

We’ll be sure to bring more Dragon Quest XI news as we approach its Japanese release, and if and when a western release is announced you’ll know right away.
