Mario Sports Superstars is approaching fast, so we’re continuing our brand new miniseries here at Nintendo Wire! Over the next few days, we’ll be covering each sport that will be included in the new game, choosing real world athletes and matching them up with their Mushroom Kingdom counterparts. Today, we’re continuing the Mushroom Mashup series with a sport Mario and co. are very familiar with: tennis. Ever wondered which Mario characters are similar to some of the stars of the sport? It’s time to find out!

Boo: Agnieszka Radwanska

Boo is a very tricky tennis player, and no one is known for trick shots out on the court as much as Agnieszka Radwanska. Seriously, she’s a wizard. Practically floating around on the court, just like our tricky friend Boo, this match makes perfect sense.

Bowser: Novak Djokovic

The Koopa King has plenty of minions that like and respect him, but the large majority of the Mushroom Kingdom doesn’t feel the same way. Novak Djokovic, loved by some, loathed by many, is seen as one of today’s biggest villains on the tennis stage. Much like Bowser, he’s very, very powerful. He’s often been ranked at number one in the world, and by the time his career is finished he’ll definitely be in the discussion of the greatest of all time. He also has more of a temper than most, as he once tore his shirt off in anger after losing an important set. We’ve seen Bowser lose his temper from time to time, have we not?

Yoshi: Viktor Troicki

Troicki is not as well known as some of the stars of pro tennis, but one play specifically connects him to Mario’s trusty dino sidekick. Yoshi is known for his extreme hops, and Troicki put his moves on display in March of 2016: hopping over the net to secure a point. Looks a lot like a flutter jump to me!

That’s it for the tennis edition of Mushroom Mashup! Come on back tomorrow where we’ll dive into the world of soccer.
