The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is perhaps the coolest game to come out of the last decade. Plenty of things contribute to its coolness: the open world, a variety of weapons and items for Link to collect, the lack of Link’s pointy hat, etc. That’s right, Link’s iconic, pointy green hat was excluded from this latest entry in the series due to the fact that it’s “difficult to make that hat look cool,” according to Satoru Takizawa, the art director for the game. Takizawa went on to say that this was the reason the hat has changed so much between the last few games in the series; going from extremely long in Twilight Princess, to shorter than usual in Skyward Sword.

Takizawa and his team put a lot of effort into changing Link’s design for the game while still helping him maintain that recognizable Link likeness and keeping the essence of the character– so even with his iconic hat and green tunic missing, Breath of the Wild’s Link is still as much of a hero as any other incarnation.
