This week in the Nintendo eShop: the eShop implodes with sales, then spontaneously reforms with even more sales, only to then be crushed by the weight of Termina’s moon.

Making up for all the tumbleweeds and cobwebs in the Nintendo eShop discount aisle for the past few weeks is Nintendo’s Black Friday Cyber Sale, live right now! Save up to 50% on a wide selection of fantastic games, from Nintendo heavy hitters to cherished indie gems now through December 5th. Don’t forget, My Nintendo members also earn Gold Points for every purchase above $5, so make sure to sign up if you aren’t already a member to reap future rewards!

For those that missed out on Sonic’s 25th anniversary birthday bash over the summer, the blue blur is spin dashing back through eShop Zone with a sale this week. From retro classics to modern controversies, there’s plenty of love for fans of all walks of life to enjoy. Move quickly though, as this sale is only running through November 29th!

Finally Level-5 is also hosting a special sale of its own this week in honor of the (Black) Friday Monsters. Unfortunately those of you hoping to live fantasy lives as warriors and woodcutters or go on puzzling adventures with dapper gentlemen on the cheap are sure to be disappointed, though there are a few notable gems that are every bit just as worthy of your hard earned dosh. I personally recommend Liberation Maiden for its frantic mech-based combat, Weapon Shop de Omasse for RPG enthusiasts who’ve always dreamed of running their own armory or Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale for its quirky, yet whimsically Ghibli-esque tale of a boy in search of monsters. The Level-5 sale is available now through November 30th, so be sure to grab anything that piques your interest before then!

Citadale (Nitrolic Games, $5.00) – To call this game a clone of the classic Castlevania formula would be a gross understatement. Penned as a return to your vampire hunting roots, Citadale: Gate of Souls is a retro inspired 2D action platformer that tasks players with guiding Sonja Dorleac (practically an anagram for Dracula) through a dark fortress while fighting countless hordes of the undead. Everything about this game just screams copyright infringement, from its questionably recycled 8-bit enemy sprites and opening title sequence to its overall setting, tone and gameplay elements. Normally I’d be ragging pretty hard on releases like these that so blatantly rip off their source material without bringing anything new to the table, but seeing as Konami is currently more concerned with developing pachinko machines than actual video games I’ll take what I can get.

octocopter

Octocopter: Super Sub Squid Escape (TACS Games, $2.99) – Octocopter is a game about working together with your adversaries to overcome insurmountable odds (I squid you not dear readers). Once bitter rivals, this charmingly quirky title pits players as an octopus teamed up with, and perched on top of, a careening submarine as they both attempt to escape the deadly depths of the ocean. Each stage tasks you with navigating through a maze of enemies, obstacles and bosses as your ship constantly spins out of control, requiring precision timing and twitchy reflexes to overcome. At the low price of just three clams, you’d be doing yourself a major disservice by not giving this underwater caper a whirl.

WII U DEMO

3Souls (Red Column, Free) – Despite having already been released back in late July, 3Souls is receiving a demo today to help anyone on the fence try before they buy. In case it flew completely under your radar months ago, the game follows the adventures of Nelesa as players explore the sad cells of a Mustland’s Moon Prison. At heart it’s a unique 2D puzzle-platformer exclusive to Wii U consoles that aims to break new ground in the genre through creative use of the GamePad. More specifically, the GamePad is used to solve puzzles and gain a glimpse into the thoughts, feelings and emotions of Ánimas’ – creatures from the world of Mustland. Coupled with its moody atmosphere and charmingly simplistic visuals, this quirky title may just be the perfect spin on the genre that platforming fans tired of stale and overused gameplay mechanics have been clamoring for.

majoramask

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (Nintendo, $9.99) – Originally released back in 2000 for the Nintendo 64, Majora’s Mask is the sixth installment in the Zelda series and second to use 3D graphics. Taking place just a few months after the events of Ocarina of Time, Link finds himself whisked away to Termina, a land under threat by a masked madman hell bent on crushing its inhabitants with the full force of the moon. The kicker? Players only have three days to stop the possessed lunatic before the world is completely obliterated, creating an immense sense of urgency and dread not often found in Link’s may other adventures. Despite recycling most of its assets, critics and fans alike praised Majora’s inventive use of the three-day-cycle mechanic, as well as Link’s ability to transform into staple Hyrulian races. To this day, it’s still considered one of the darkest and most original games in the series, and for some even usurps its legendary predecessor. While the 3DS remake is by far the superior way to play the game these days, give this a download if you want to experience Termina at its purest (or if you just need a cheaper alternative).

Breath of Fire II (Capcom, $7.99) – Originally released on the SNES back in 1995, Breath of Fire II is a traditional RPG and direct sequel to the original set 500 years in the future. Players assume the role of an orphan named Ryu Bateson, a sword-for-hire with the ability to transform into powerful draconic beings. It’s often hailed as the better of the two SNES games, praised for its engaging storyline, colorful cast of characters, solid gameplay mechanics and vibrant 16-bit graphics. Unfortunately it never quite reaches the same heights as role-playing legends Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI, marred by shoddy localization efforts, forgettable music and unfair spikes in difficulty. Nevertheless, those seeking a fairly decent and absorbing RPG adventure on the go ripped straight out of the SNES era are sure to find plenty to love.
