Axiom Verge designer Tom Happ recently held a Reddit AMA along with ex-Nintendo indie chief Dan Adelman, during which an interesting tidbit involving Metroid series protagonist Samus Aran was revealed.

When asked if they had ever considered adding a Samus costume to the game, Dan Adelman jumped in to reply with this:

We would have loved to have a secret code to have Trace where a Samus costume. Some people inside Nintendo really liked the idea, but after a lot of internal discussion, they ultimately had to decide not to give us permission to do that. I think the idea that someone could play the entire game of Axiom Verge looking like Samus Aran was too big of a concern for them.

It’s unfortunate news to hear for a number of fans. Nintendo is very protective of their properties and since Axiom Verge is a Metroid-inspired game, they were most likely concerned with people confusing it for an actual Metroid title –- especially if a Samus skin was made available in the game.
