In a strange turn of events earlier today Nintendo of Japan broke tradition and released a New 3DS Virtual Console game outside of its usual Wednesday eShop release window; Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.

The fourth entry in the series, the Super Famicom’s Genealogy of the Holy War is often regarded as one of the most important Fire Emblem games out there, although sadly it never saw a western release. You can check out how it shaped the future of the series in our retrospective article, which marked the 20th anniversary of the title earlier this year.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War is available to download to Japanese 3DS systems now for 926 yen!

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
