Today saw yet another huge news update for the upcoming Pokémon Sun and Moon, with several new creatures taking the spotlight. However, the official site has also updated with info regarding changes to the Pokémon Global Link online service.

To get the worst, and perhaps inevitable, news out of the way first – the PGL support for X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will be terminated when Sun and Moon launch. This likely means services like Wonder Trade, the online logbook and PokéMiles will be taken down and replaced. Players of the Generation V games will remember this happening a few years ago, rendering most of the bottom screen obsolete as a result.

It does sound like the service will become even better for the new games, however. For the first time players will be able to set up “Friendly Competitions”, which act similarly to the official tournaments but you can play by your own rules. You can set limits to only allow pre-approved players, or let anyone participate.

Live Competitions will also be introduced, with players being able to compete in the same place by scanning a QR code that’s generated by the tournament’s host.

Needless to say, be sure to check back for some Nintendo Wire competitions after release!
